Instructions - Fulbright Student Grant Application 2011-2012

This document is designed to guide you through the application process. Please read the instructions carefully. Only complete applications will be considered for review.

Please note: In specific instances (English translations, letters of recommendation, medical form) the instructions by the Austrian Fulbright Commission are in conflict with the instructions given in the IIE online application. In those cases, the instructions by the Austrian Commission on the following three pages apply, NOT the instructions by IIE.

You will have to submit your application online and in the format of a paper application.

The following documents must be forwarded to the Fulbright Commission by mail. Please forward 1 original and 6 copies of items a) - g) (the copies will be distributed to the members of the interview panels).

a) Fill out and print the one-page cover sheet

b) Printouts of your online application. Enclose all photocopies in one envelope or folder; do not use separate folders for each document. PLEASE DO NOT STAPLE.

c) Your application must include a resume, in which you should summarize your educational and employment history, additional qualifications, and extracurricular activities in reverse chronological order (tabellarischer Lebenslauf).

d) Photocopy(-ies) of your "Diplomprüfungszeugnis(se)", "Sponsions-" and "Promotionsurkunde", "Bescheid über den Abschluss des Studiums" (if applicable).

e) A list of all university subjects studied and examinations taken, including grades (Ausdruck bzw. Formular "Nachweis über den Studienerfolg", das sämtliche abgelegten Prüfungen im Haupt- und Nebenfach auflistet). Please enclose 1 original, and 6 photocopies of the "Nachweis". Note: The Fulbright Commission does not require English translations of academic diplomas and transcripts at this stage of the application.

f) The signature form.

g) A photocopy of your TOEFL (LLM and Applied Arts candidates) or GRE test results (all other candidates). Official score reports MUST be sent to the Institute of International Education in New York (code 2326 for both TOEFL and GRE) and directly to the Fulbright Commission:

Fulbright Commission TOEFL Code: 7517
Fulbright Commission GRE Code: 4800.

h) Three confidential letters of reference in English by professors who have taught you or supervised your academic work must be completed on the form that can be found with the supplemental materials on the application website. Preferably, the letters of recommendation will be uploaded onto the online application system directly by the recommenders (who can be registered by the candidates). If this is not possible, they can either be sent in with your application (in sealed and signed envelopes) or directly to the Fulbright Commission by the recommenders.

If you have considerable work experience, one letter of reference can also come from a current or previous employer. Note: Successful candidates will be asked to submit two additional letters of recommendation in the fall.

i) Architecture and art students are required to submit work samples/portfolios with their application.

j) Optional: writing sample for students/graduates of all other fields

A writing sample supports your application to a U.S. university. It is not necessary to submit a writing sample with your application. Successful candidates will be able to hand it in at a later date.

Please note:

a) We do not require you to fill out the "Personal financial information form" at this point. Successful candidates will have an opportunity to fill out that information at a later date. If you decide to fill out this form in the first step of the application process, the information given will not be considered in the Commission's review of your application.

b) It is recommended that you compose your Study Objectives and Personal Statement (pages 3 and 4) using a word processor, and "cut and paste" it into the application.

Interviews will be held in mid June 2010 in Vienna.
Deadline for submission of complete applications is May 1 - this date applies to the postmark.
