Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship Program
Fulbright Austria is interested in identifying departments of German at U.S. colleges and universities that would be interested in hosting Austrian students or recent graduates as Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs).
The Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York City manages the Fulbright Student Program and is also responsible for handling the stateside aspects of the FLTA program, including J-1visas, SEVIS registration, and DHS issues. IIE is required to ascertain that host institutions fulfil certain minimum requirements in order for FLTAs to be eligible for the J-1 exchange visa associated with the Fulbright Program.
These requirements are “room and board, a tuition and fees waiver for the required two courses per semester and a small monthly stipend of between $400 and $600 per month. Some host institutions offer a larger monthly stipend from which the FLTA themselves pay room, board and all other expenses.” Consult the IIE website on the institutional requirements for participating in the program and an outline of the program).
Ultimately, each FLTA package is tailor-made. An added advantage of working directly together with Fulbright Austria is that it can suggest candidates to you based on the kind of profile individual institutions are seeking. In other words, Fulbright Austria takes needs and expectations of potential host institutions into account when interviewing candidates, thus facilitating a good match as an end result.
