U.S. Students, Graduates, and Young Teachers

Under the auspices of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, recent undergraduates and graduate students may apply for grants to study in Austria. Advance planning is important. An annual grant competition is managed by the Institute of International Education (with an application deadline in October) which prescreens applications. The files of semi-finalists are forwarded to the Austrian-American Educational Commission in Vienna, and a binational committee selects finalists, who are notified about the status of their applications in March.
The Fulbright Commission also assists the Austrian Ministry of Education with the management of its U.S. Teaching Assistant Program. Under the auspices of this program, U.S. college and university graduates have an opportunity to work in Austrian secondary schools as teaching assistants for eight months of the school year (October-May).

Applicants who are currently enrolled in Master's or PhD programs at an American university in one of the following fields: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics or Physics may apply to the IIE Central Europe Summer Research Institute (CESRI) program.
The program is intended for scientific laboratory research projects and thus fieldwork, policy, ethics and related disciplines will not be considered. Also, projects involving clinical research on human subjects will not be accepted.
Application requirements, and the application form, are available online at: www.iie.org/CESRI

The Austrian government also funds a limited number of "global" grant programs. Information on these other grant opportunities is provided by the Austrian Exchange Service.
