Welcome to the Red, White, and Book Club!

Fulbright Austria is proud to present the Red, White, and Book Club, a meeting of bright minds that are interested in exploring US literature, culture, and higher education! In our next meeting, we will be discussing Real Americans by Rachel Khong in Innsbruck. This book examines themes of family and identity, class and belonging, and both the application process and the student experience at US universities—topics that we’ll discuss while also learning about opportunities to study in the US with Fulbright Austria. Get ready to enjoy some light refreshments and hot takes! Registration is required for this event.

Book summary

Real Americans by Rachel Khong is a multi-generational novel following a Chinese American family, exploring themes of class, race, identity, and inheritance through the stories of three women: May, a geneticist escaping Mao's China; her daughter Lily, an intern who falls for a wealthy pharmaceutical heir; and her grandson Nick, who seeks his absent father. The narrative spans from 1960s China to the late 2020s, weaving together historical events, family secrets, and the profound question of what it means to be a "real American."
