Join us for Austria’s Fulbright Country Day in celebration of the global Fulbright Program's 75th anniversary!

We are happy to announce that we will host an online Fulbright Country Day on 3 November 2021. Fulbright Country Days are part of the “75 days of Fulbright” campaign that was launched to celebrate the global Fulbright Program’s 75th anniversary. During the campaign, different countries will feature or amplify content about their Fulbright programs.

We are excited to host a panel discussion to focus on the achievements of our programs and our alums. The discussion will highlight not only Fulbright Austria’s Combined Grant and Community-based Combined Grant—which are unique within the global Fulbright Program—but also US alums who participated in the Fulbright Program both in Austria and in other countries.

This exciting event is free of charge and includes a Q&A session at the end. Register below to join us on Zoom, or tune in at the bottom of this page to watch the livestream.

Maria-Regina Kecht

Maria-Regina Kecht was an Austrian Fulbright student of linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1978–79. Today, Regina serves as a member of Fulbright Austria’s board and a panel member on Fulbright Austria’s Alum Advisory Panel.

Regina holds a doctor of philosophy from the University of Innsbruck and a master of arts from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Regina also did doctoral studies at the University of Indiana in Bloomington. She has a wealth of academic and scholarly experience in both the US and Austrian higher-education systems. She is the recipient of numerous curriculum and research grants. Her accomplishments also include several publications, including three books and over 35 articles and book chapters in refereed journals and university presses.

Cornelia Stellwag-Carion

2009–10 Austrian Fulbright student
2021 Alum Advisory Panel member

Cornelia Stellwag-Carion was a 2009–10 Austrian Fulbright student based in NYC at Teachers College, Columbia University. Since 2014, Cornelia has worked in fundraising and development at the Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien (mumok).

Cornelia is an active Fulbright Austria alum. She has served as an Alum Advisory Panel member since 2017. Cornelia holds a doctor of philosophy in theater studies and a master of arts in theater and film studies, art history, musicology, German language, and literature from the University of Vienna. In 2011, Cornelia received a master of arts in art administration from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Julie Elston

2012–13 and 2019–20 Fulbright-Kathryn and Craig Hall Distinguished Chair for Entrepreneurship in Central Europe

Julie Elston is a professor of business at the College of Business, Oregon State University. In2008, she was selected as a US Fulbright scholar to Germany. In 2012 and 2019, Julie was selected as an US Fulbright scholar to Austria and was named the Fulbright-Kathryn and Craig Hall Distinguished Chair for Entrepreneurship in Central Europe at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

Julie is a regular contributor to the field of entrepreneurship and serves as an associate editor of Small Business Economics: An Entrepreneurship Journal and The Journal of Global Entrepreneurship. Julie has served as a consultant to a number of international governmental agencies, organizations, and firms, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Deutsche Bundesbank (German Central Bank), and the US National Academy of Sciences’ Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy.

Julie is a proud graduate of the University of Washington's Department of Economics. Julie’s previous academic positions include the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin in Germany, the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, the California Institute of Technology, and the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates.

Marc Landry

2016–17 Fulbright-Botstiber Visiting Professor of Austrian-American Studies in Austria

Marc Landry is assistant professor of Central European history and associate director of Center Austria: The Austrian Marshall Plan Center for European Studies at the University of New Orleans. He teaches courses in Central European, global, and environmental history. Marc has also served as a guest professor at the University of Innsbruck. His research focuses on the environmental history of modern Europe. He has held fellowships from the German Academic Exchange Service, the Deutsches Museum, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Fulbright Association. His research on the environmental history of the Alps has appeared in the journal Environmental History. He is currently completing a book manuscript on the history of the Alps as a renewable energy landscape.

Briana Niblick

2007–08 US Fulbright student (Combined Grant)

Briana Niblick received a 2007–08 Fulbright Austria Combined Grant and was based in Vienna. Having initially proposed sustainable engineering research with faculty at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, conversations upon arrival led Briana to join an EU-funded project on resource-oriented sanitation in East Africa and to travel to meet partners in Kitgum, Uganda. Fulbright was an adventure right from the start!

Today Briana works as an environmental engineer specializing in life cycle assessment at the US Environmental Protection Agency. Her research asks, “What are the potential environmental impacts of this product or service and how do we ensure that our models capture the full picture?” In addition to her research, Briana also serves as the chair of the EPA’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Council under the Office of Civil Rights and as an advisor to the cross-governmental LGBTQ+ working group, Pride in Federal Service. 

Briana holds a doctorate in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Pittsburgh as well as a BS in civil and environmental engineering and a BA in German from Lafayette College. Fundamentally curious about the world, Briana has traveled extensively for research and cultural opportunities, including stays in Honduras, Brazil, Uganda, Germany, Poland, and Russia.

Thomas Schoenbaum

2000–01 Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Law

Thomas J. Schoenbaum is presently the Harold S. Shefelman Professor of Law at the University of Washington in Seattle and is research professor of law at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan and his PhD degree from Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge (UK). Thomas has also served as professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and associate dean at Tulane University in New Orleans.

Thomas has received multiple Fulbright awards across the globe, including an award to Austria as the 2000–01 Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Law at the University of Innsbruck.

Thomas lectures all over the world and is the author of many books and articles on international economic law, business law, international environmental law, and maritime law.

Diana Sosa

2021–22 US Fulbright student (Community-Based Combined Grant)

Diana Sosa is originally from Centreville, Virginia, and is a proud graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, where she focused on Latin American studies and international development. During her undergrad, Diana spent a semester in Ecuador, participated in the United States Foreign Service Internship Program, conducted research on domestic workers, and interned for Senator Mark Warner. Last year, she taught English in Mallorca, Spain, through their North American Language and Culture Assistantship Program. Now as a 2021–22 Fulbright combined grantee, she’s once again teaching English as well as volunteering at the non-profit Verein Maiz and taking classes at Johannes Kepler University in Linz. Diana loves hiking, dancing bachta, trivia, and searching for the best cappuccino in town.
