With the Fulbright Prize in American Studies, Fulbright Austria acknowledges the enduring importance of American studies and the role that innovative research by young Austrian scholars plays in contributing to the fulfillment of Fulbright Austria's mandate to promote mutual understanding between the peoples of Austria and the United States of America.

The prize recognizes the best thesis in American studies. It is awarded annually to one to two individuals based on a competition managed by the AAAS. The award ceremony is part of the official opening ceremony of the AAAS’s annual conference.
