Fulbright Austria celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, 2019, by featuring the stories and research of five Fulbright grantees and alumnae in science over the course of one week. We kicked off the week with a story and Instagram takeover by Zoë Dobler, a current Fulbright-Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Award grantee who is researching the mechanisms behind neurodevelopmental disorders at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria this year. Our celebration continued with words of encouragement from former Fulbright-NAWI Graz Visiting Professor Irena Swanson, who emphasized the value of women supporting women in the field. On Wednesday, we featured another current Fulbright-Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Award recipient, Elizabeth Sarkel, along with her lab mates and fellow supporters. Former Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Michigan State University Dr. Rafaela Schinegger, who was recently awarded the 2017 Reinhard Liepolt Prize for Danube Research, was also featured in light of her work in hydrobiology and aquatic ecosystems at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). We rounded out our celebration with words of encouragement to young women interested in the STEM field from current Fulbright-Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Award recipient Amulya Pratapa, who is researching brain imaging at the Medical University Vienna.
