Did you know that the Jewish Museum Vienna's new special exhibition, "Trude und Elvis. Wien – Memphis – Hollywood," has a Fulbright connection? James Forsher, a film scholar and filmmaker based in Seattle, WA, was a Fulbright Specialist at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt in 2015. In Klagenfurt, James taught courses on American film history and contributed to the American Studies Department’s ongoing research projects on Star Trek and censorship in American Television. During his time in Austria, James also collaborated with Austrian director Kurt Langbein on the documentary" Elvis and the Girl From Vienna/Elvis und das Mädchen aus Wien," a film about his mother Trude Forsher. Trude fled Vienna after having been arrested by the SS in 1938 and emigrated to New York via London, but eventually settled down in Hollywood with her husband and children. In 1956, she landed a job as Elvis Presley’s secretary and helped shape the early years of his career. The Jewish Museum Vienna is currently dedicating a special exhibition to Trude and Elvis, which opened on April 5, 2017, and the documentary will air on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Elvis’s death on August 14, 2017.
