From navigating visas to understanding the local dialect, moving to a foreign country is notoriously difficult. However, I had some clear privileges in the process for several reasons, including that I speak German. Utilizing my privilege to do what I can to help those who have moved here under egregious circumstances and do not have prior knowledge of the German language has been an experience that I am thankful for. Namely, I have been able to volunteer with refugees from around the world through several organizations, which has involved handing out food, running a donations drive, and teaching them English or German during my time in Austria. I look forward to continuing these activities next year! I am grateful that serving as a US teaching assistant in Austria has made this experience possible.
