As we look ahead to the global Fulbright Program’s 80th anniversary, we are reminded that the true measure of Fulbright Austria’s success extends far beyond the time our program participants spend abroad. The Fulbright Austria experience does not end with the grant period; rather, it marks the beginning of a lifelong commitment to meaningful impact. At Fulbright Austria, we see this impact reflected in the many ways our alums give back to their communities after returning to Austria and the US, not just with new knowledge but with a deepened sense of responsibility. They bring international perspectives into classrooms, introduce innovative teaching methods, and foster critical thinking among their students. Others contribute as researchers who translate academic insight into innovations or as artists who engage audiences in dialogue on Austrian and US culture and shared values. And our alums’ contributions to their communities are not limited to their academic or professional backgrounds; those contributions often come in the form of general acts of service that can uplift segments of society not engaged in our alums’ academic or professional circles.
As we approach this milestone anniversary of the global Fulbright Program, initiatives such as the Fulbright Association Global Day of Service on 1 August 2026 highlight the importance of collective engagement. This global effort brings alums and program participants together across borders and generations to contribute their time, expertise, and energy in service of others. It is a powerful reminder that our mission lives not only in exchange, but in continued commitment. To help shine a light on the importance of giving back and serving the societies that shape us, Fulbright Austria is launching a back-to-school donation drive for books and school supplies.
Our drive will launch on 1 August as part of the Fulbright Association Global Day of Service and will continue until 1 September to give as many community members as possible the opportunity to participate. Every book and school supply that our community gives us will be donated to two charities in Austria: carla/Caritas and Integrationshaus. We selected these two charities because they serve not just the general Austrian population, but also the immigrant children working to understand and integrate into Austrian society.
