Fulbright Austria Featured in Austrian Studies Newsmagazine

Fulbright Austria is well represented in the most recent edition of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Austrian Studies Newsmagazine with an article on the seventieth anniversary of the establishment of the Fulbright Program in 1946; its relationship to Austrian Studies in the USA; and the establishment of the Center for Austrian Studies at the U of M. This edition also includes features or book reviews related to Fulbright or Fulbright-Hays alumni Gary Cohen, Pieter Judson, Tara Zahra, and John Deak, and an interview with Fulbright Austria alumna and board member Roberta Maierhofer!

First cohort of Community-Based Combined Fulbright Grantees

We are pleased to welcome the first cohort of Community-Based Combined Fulbright Grantees to Austria! This new grant is one of the first service-learning focused awards in the Fulbright Program and provides four US students per year with opportunities for social engagement, service learning and volunteering in Austrian institutions of civil society. Four US Fulbrighters Awarded Foreign Service Fellowships

Two US Fulbright alumnae and a current Fulbright US Student have been awarded the Charles B. Rangel Graduate Fellowship, named for retiring Congressman Charles B. Rangel. Another US Fulbright alumna received a similar fellowship, the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship. Both of these competitive fellowships provide generous scholarships for graduate study, as well as mentoring and summer internship opportunities, and prepare fellows for a career in the US Foreign Service. New Fulbright Austria co-worker, Dr. Susanne Hamscha

Dr. Susanne Hamscha joined the team at Fulbright Austria this July and will use her expertise in the Austrian and American academic landscapes to assist scholars on both sides of the Atlantic and ensure that their Fulbright experience will be successful and memorable.

New Fulbright Austria co-worker, Mag. Belona Berchtaler

In August, Mag. Belona Berchtaler joined the Fulbright Austria team as Program Officer responsible for the Austrian and US Teaching Assistantship Programs. As a Fulbright alumna she is looking forward to facilitating unique opportunities to young graduates interested in education from both sides of the Atlantic.

USTA Kick-Off Event, October 7, 2016

The Fulbright Austria Team was pleased to welcome 26 second-year US Teaching Assistants to the office in q21/MQ for a workshop on lessons learned and best practices in teaching led by Program Officer Belona Berchtaler, and a session on EducationUSA resources introduced by EducationUSA Adviser Molly Roza. It was great to see all of our seasoned USTAs and connect with more than 30 new ones, that joined us for a glass of wine on the balcony.

USTA Welcome Event in Innsbruck and Fulbright Gathering: November 11, 2016

Provincial governments and local high schools across Austria are teaming up to give incoming US Teaching Assistants tours of the provincial capitals and receptions! USTA Program Officer Belona Berchtaler is travelling around the country to meet and welcome the new USTAs.

USTA Second-Year Kick-Off: October 7, 2016

Fulbright Austria will host an afternoon of brainstorming, discussion, and just plain fun for the second-year teaching assistants to start the new school year off with enthusiasm. The program will include group activities were TAs can share what lessons and strategies worked best for them in the previous year, as well as share what ideas they have for making their second year even better than the first. The afternoon will be followed by a reception where first-year teaching assistant can mingle with and ask advice from second-year teaching assistants.

USTA Orientation, September 26-30, 2016

Over 100 new USTAs got oriented in beautiful Saalbach Hinterglemm and historic St Pölten Austria before starting their new positions as TAs in secondary school classrooms across all nine Austrian provinces. Executive Director Dr. Lonnie Johnson, Program Officer Belona Berchtaler, and Program Assistant Betsy Akins welcomed the new cohort as part of the Fulbright Austria community.

US Fulbright Orientation, September 20-23, 2016

Twenty-two new US Fulbright student grantees and seven scholars participated in the Fall 2016 US Fulbright orientation, which included lectures and discussions in Fulbright Austria's Q21 offices, a walking tour of the Vienna's Ringstrasse, a reception at the home of U.S. Embassy Vienna Deputy Chief of Mission Eugene Young, and a field trip to the beautiful Stift Klosterneuburg.

Fulbright Austria executive director, Lonnie R. Johnson, will be giving a talk on “Philosophy, Politics, Money, and Memory: The Fulbright Program at Seventy, 1946-2016”, at the University of Arkansas on November 2 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Fulbright Program.

Fulbright Alumni Andy Proctor gave a talk about his Fulbright experiences at NAWI Graz at the University of Arkansas

US Fulbright Alumni Andy Proctor who was a visiting professor at NAWI Graz last semester held a seminar on his recent Fulbright sabbatical in Graz with a discussion on the related national and local Food Science teaching/research programs and regional food industries at the University of Arkansas.

Going Away Heuriger June 17, 2016

New MCI-ASU Dual Degree Master’s Program in Mechatronics and Engineering Physics

One of the goals for US Scholar Judson Clements (Appalachian State University/MCI) for his Fulbright grant was to implement a dual degree Master's program between the two institutions. The mission of the dual program is to provide graduate education in two-country and two-university environments in order to graduate future interdisciplinary science and engineering experts.
