Fulbright Austria is saddened to announce the passing of Eva (Jorda) Schussek, the legendary American Program Assistant of the Austrian Fulbright Commission, on September 18, 2017. “Frau Schussek” – as she was known to the some 1,400 U.S. Fulbrighters she assisted in the course of her thirty-five years of service from 1954 until 1989 – was instrumental helping generations of American Fulbright grantees get to Austria and get settled in Austria. Throughout the years, she advised them with great patience, concern, and good humor on the peculiarities of Austrian manners, mores, and institutions: before and after their arrivals and during their stays.

New Agreement of Cooperation and Exchange between the University of Arkansas and TU Graz

Prof. Andy Proctor from the Department of Food Science at University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, spent the fall semester of the 2015-16 program year as the Fulbright-NAWI Graz Visiting Professor in the Natural Sciences. This Fulbright award is jointly sponsored by the Technical University Graz and the Karl Franzens University Graz to enhance collaboration between these two institutions in the natural sciences (Naturwissenschaften, hence the acronym NAWI). Professor Proctor and his combined teaching and research project, "Integrating Basic and Applied Food Chemistry," were well received in Graz and led to fruitful discussions between the TU Graz and the University of Arkansas about institutionalizing more extensive collaboration and cooperation in the future. One of the outcomes of Prof. Proctor’s Fulbright award is a collaborative agreement between the University of Arkansas and TU Graz to promote joint research and bilateral student mobility in the food sciences that was signed in Graz on June 22. Fulbright Austria is proud to be associated with these partners and this outcome! Another outcome of this agreement was a summer program, in which, according to a press release, "Food science students from the U of A's Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, as well as students from other countries, participated in an innovative two-week short course, Food Science and Culinary Arts to Maximize Food Quality, at the Technical University of Graz in Austria for U.S. and European students during the summer.

A letter from the Executive Director: Stand for Fulbright

Dear Alumni, Friends, and Associates of the Austrian-American Fulbright Program,  We are at a critical juncture in the history of the Fulbright Program that calls for action. The Administration’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2018 that came out on May 23 is based on a $54 billion increase in defense spending that is to be offset by a $54 billion decrease in non-defense programs. This proposed budget entails cuts over 30% to the State Department including a 47% cut to the Fulbright Program. A unilateral cut of these dimensions to the Fulbright Program – from $236 million to $148 million – would have devastating consequences. Furthermore, it would shake the confidence of the long-standing partner governments with binational commissions that contribute over $100 million annually to the program.
